Specialists in Dry Eye care
If you are suffering from persistent dryness, scratchiness or a burning sensation on your eyes, you may have dry eye syndrome. Additionally, you may feel like there is “something in your eye” – also known as a “foreign body sensation.” Or possibly, you may have watery eyes, as odd as that seems, when excessive dryness works to over stimulate the production of the watery component of your eye’s tears.
What causes dry eye syndrome? A number of factors may cause dry eye syndrome:
- Adults over age 40, especially women (possibly due to hormone fluctuations)
- Dry, dusty or windy climates with low humidity
- Side effects from certain medications, including antihistamines, antidepressants, birth control pills and Parkinson’s
- Long-term contact lens wear
Dry eyes are also associated with certain diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis rosacea, and Sjogren’s syndrome – an autoimmune disease that impacts the glands responsible for keeping the eyes, mouth and other parts of the body moist and lubricated.
At Bay Hill Eyecare, we specialize in the effective detection and treatment of dry eyes. We may recommend lubricating eye drops (artificial tears) to alleviate the dryness, scratchiness and burning, prescription eye drops to help increase tear production in your eye, or some other treatment, depending on your exact condition.
